While the technical part of our jobs can be challenging, convincing others to get on board with our ideas and vision is much more difficult. And in this world of global business and multiple bosses & stakeholders across multiple time zones, we are often dependent on persuading others who aren't even part of our reporting structure or department. You may also be in a position where your career success depends on persuading those outside of your organisation such as potential new hires, clients, regulators or suppliers.
How do great leaders do it? Great leaders lead through influence so having 'power' per se isn't enough to persuade others to be interested in our perspective and approach to solving a particular problem. Bullying of course does work, but only in the very short term. As soon as the bully leaves, whatever the bully pushed through, gets dropped with amazing speed.
